Romans and Italians in general are known for taking off the whole month of August to go on a holiday. Most places will be closed during Ferragosto (15th of August) but there will still be plenty of great things to do during the hot month of August.

”The Madonna of the Snow ” is one of the most important events in Rome! The legend says the Vigin Mary appeared in Pope Libero’s dreams and showed him the location where he should build a new church. When the pope checked the location, it was filled with snow even though it was the middle of summer. The Pope knew that this was a sign and build the church of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Every year on the 5th of August there is a reenactment of the snow falling right in front of the church at exactly midnight.
